Swedish design
Svenskt Tenn’s store is not to be missed for iconic Josef Frank’s world famous pattern designs on furniture, porcelain, textiles and accessories. Or shop for Swedish and international design classics at internationally renowned Nordiska Galleriet, Stockholm’s leading interior design store.
Cultural souvenirs
If you have time for only one pit stop, want to be cheered up with wonderfully bright colours and want to shop for something really Swedish, it doesn’t get more Swedish or uplifting than Svensk Slöjd in Östermalm. This is the spot for the most charming Swedish handicrafts from all over Sweden. Shop for everything from textiles and embroidery to intricate knitwear and elegant wooden kitchenware.
Historical shopping hub
Gamla Stan, or ‘Old Town’, is where you can browse boutiques, bric-à-brac and antiquarian shops at your leisure. Wander the little crooked cobbled streets, and pick up some kitsch Viking helmet souvenirs as well as highly prized organic silver, intricate glass jewellery and detailed Lapland Sami handicraft from the iconic Konsthantverket.
Urban chic
For a therapeutic dose of affordable high street retail, visit Gallerian shopping mall on Hamngatan, or wander down Drottningsgatan and find an H&M on every corner. Shop for international fashion house brands in Östermalm and eclectic brands like Ditta von Teese at brat-trap Sturegallerian. But for that new season must-have pair of jeans, go to nearby Swedish fashionista favourites, Acne and Hope flagship stores.
Vintage
The island of Södermalm is synonymous with vintage in Stockholm. Try Retro for quirky furniture and lamps. Discerning vintage shoppers love fashion finds at Beyond Retro, Judith Second Hand, and at Grandpa in SoFo (South of Folkungsgatan). Another fashion-darling hotspot is Neu, boldly flogging emerging cult labels such as House of Dagmar.
Department stores
For fashion and design under one roof, Stockholm has three stalwart department stores slap bang in the middle of the city on Norrmalm. NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) is the great flagship department store where the posh can shop ‘til they drop and carries local designers such as Filippa K, Paul & Friends and Svenska Designers. PUB, a fashion forward store at the helm of modern Swedish design, carries labels such as +46's, Ann-Sofie Back and The Local Firm. For more affordable Swedish labels, go to the ever-popular Åhléns.
