Swedish design
Olsson and Gerthel do everything from interiors and fantastically functional but sleek Scandinavian modern furniture, to bags and accessories. Norrgaval is a gem for mats, lamps, glass, ceramics and textiles (watch out for the furniture with woolly sheepskin built in).
David Design concept store is inspiring for colourful interior ideas and Liebling is quite simply adorable, with pretty design in mind from fashion to interiors and gift items. For every oddity under the sun, stop off at Designtorget, where new talent gets the chance to sell their designs in everything from jewellery to kitchenware and children’s toys.
Cultural souvenirs
To buy handicrafts directly from 20 regional professional craft artists, visit Formargruppen, an artists cooperative with a shop and a gallery specialising in contemporary crafts. Interior utensil and gifts in the retro vein, shop at MissJuniversum for an injection of Swedish kookiness. And antique lovers will be pleased with a visit to Rågers Antique & Design.
Historical shopping hub
Lila Torg is the charming cobbled square with half-timbered post-Medieval houses where you can shop for Swedish handicrafts as well as designs from the indigenous Sami people of Swedish Lapland. Enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of non-stop traffic at the cosy cafés, restaurants and the outdoor covered market.
Urban chic
NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) is the department store where the posh can shop ‘til they drop and carries Swedish designers such as Filippa K, Paul & Friends and Svenska Designers. But if you prefer strolling through boutiques, head for Baltzar City - a commercial street lined with designer shops.
Vintage
Malmö is an absolute gem for vintage shopping. Go to Goddam for boho buys, Chique for glam bags and jewellery and give yourself time for Mani - a Malmö chaotic classic. For a flea market full of vintage charms, shop at Marknadsbörsen on Wednesday evenings and weekends.
Shopping centres
Malmö has shopping centres all over the city centre. Triangeln is the largest with everything under one (glass) roof. Much in the same vein is Entré, Hanza and Caroli city shopping centres. A little outside of the centre is the large Mobilia with a comprehensive selection of shops. For affordable fashion and a decent selection of Swedish labels, go to the ever-popular Åhléns department store.
