Driving on ice
Ice driving is a must if you’re in wintery Northern Sweden. Get behind the wheel of a Porsche or Audio Quattro driving on ice tracks and try your hand at slalom driving at Kall Auto Lodge in Åre. Other icy driving experiences involving roaring through white-clad forest and over frozen lakes are available in and around Arjeplog, Ebbenjarka, Luleå and Piteå.
Dog sledding
Huskies. Arctic tundra. The Northern Lights shining and crackling above you. You’re part of a team feeding and looking after your four-legged drive train. Perhaps the ultimate team-building activity – it’s you, your colleagues and a team of trusty Huskies against the wilds of Northern Sweden. Accompanied by expert mushers and guides, dog sledding trips are available throughout northern Sweden in wintertime.
Speeding on snow and ice
Snowmobiles and cross carts are two of the fastest modes of transport on snow and ice - and both are a huge amount of fun. On snowmobiles you can take guided trips through this winter wonderland; even overnight trips where you stay in tents in the wilds. Cross carts are more for fast, furious fun on ice and snow rinks where you can race against your colleagues. Adventure companies all over Northern Sweden arrange both activities with experienced guides and instructors. Check out Piteå Havsbad’s cross cart adventures.
Breaking the ice
An ice-breaker safari is something you probably only do once. So why not do it aboard the Arctic Explorer, a 332 tonne ice breaker that ploughs through the Gulf of Bothnia off Piteå in Northern Sweden? You can also don a survival suit and jump into the freezing waters, or do an ice ‘walkabout’ if you want to; but don’t forget the survival suit. Expect bumping, grinding, creaky fun.
River rafting
River and white-water rafting are both available in Northern Sweden, with its abundance of rivers, rapids and streams. You could choose the Kukolla Rapids on the Torne River, near Haparanda, or Vindelalven in southern Lapland, which is famous for its rapids. The setting for these watery adventures could hardly be more pristine or ruggedly beautiful.
