Design
Get a guided tour of the fab Rösshka Museum to see the development of form and function through the ages in fashion, design and decorative arts. Swedish and international designers are showcased. No design is too obscure at Rösshka. Follow the historical development of everything from Chinese ceramics, to Christian Dior to a fully functional crystal car (yes you read it right).
Painting
When it comes to the world´s most splendid collection of national-romantic late 19th century Scandinavian art including works by Munch, The Gothenburg Art Museum is quite a pit stop. But a pit stop doesn’t really do it justice. Clear the afternoon and dissolve into the hazy beauties of Swedish greats such as Zorn and Larsson.
Photography
If contemporary photography is your thing, chalk down the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg's Art Museum as a must-do. Check out the upcoming photographic metaworlds of Marie Andersson, the staged and unforgettable narrative photography of Cooper & Gorfer and the Richard Avedon iconic fashion portraiture greats. And for emerging talent look for the annual New Nordic Photography exhibition.
Fortress at sea
If you’re curious about dungeons, canon balls and misplaced churches, visit the once-upon-a-time protector of Gothenburg – the Älvsborgs fortress, sitting a 30-minute boat ride into the magnificent archipelago seascape. Get a guided tour and find out how in days gone-by, the fortress protected Göteborgians from seafaring invader folk (which turned out to be just the Danes).
World Culture
The national Museum of World Culture finds harmony in difference. Evolved from the Ethnographic Museum of Göteborg, it exhibits and interprets anthropological and archaeological research on world culture and globalisation in an interdisciplinary way. Phew. The prizewinning building itself is by London architects Cécile Brisac and Edgar Gonzalez. It’s all cement and glass and just oozes urban modernity. Get the bizarre feeling of being both outside and inside at the same time with its nature side location giving woodland views.
